12-Day Journey to England & Scotland

DAY 1 (SEP 28) Depart ATL for London, England

DAY 2 (SEP 29) Arrival in London – Arrive in London. Meet with the guide and transfer to the hotel. Enjoy free time in the afternoon. In the evening, share a welcome dinner and receive an overview of the journey in the footsteps of the Reformers. Dinner and overnight in London.

DAY 3 (SEP 30) London – In the words of Peter Ackroyd, “London goes beyond any boundary or convention. It contains every wish or word ever spoken, every action or gesture ever made, every harsh or noble statement ever expressed. It is illimitable. It is Infinite London.” After breakfast, experience a panoramic tour of London. See Big Ben, Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, London Eye, Parliament, Tower Bridge, and Buckingham Palace. Within the city tour, discover the Bun Hill Fields Burial Ground, a Nonconformist burial ground and final resting place of John Bunyan, Isaac Watts, Daniel Defoe, and William Blake, along with many other leading intellectuals, radicals, and clergymen from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. In the afternoon, visit of Westminster Abbey (inside). Since 1066, it has been the location of the coronations of 40 English and British monarchs and a burial site for 18 English, Scottish, and British monarchs. Dinner and overnight in London.

DAY 4 (OCT 1) Canterbury - Leeds Castle – In the morning, drive to Canterbury where we visit Canterbury Cathedral (inside). Learn about the year 1534 when King Henry VIII declared himself head of the Church in England and took control of church affairs. From the year 1536, his officials went around the country, closing monasteries and claiming their wealth for the crown. Located in the Canterbury Cathedral, the shrine of St. Thomas was especially problematic for King Henry VIII. By this time, Becket was being remembered as someone who lost his life standing up to the royal authority – something Henry did not want to encourage. Becket was declared a banned saint, and in the year 1538, Becket’s shrine was destroyed. On the way back to London, stop at Leeds Castle, rich in history. It has been a Norman stronghold, the private property of six of England’s medieval queens, a palace used by Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon, a Jacobean country house, a Georgian mansion, and an elegant early 20th-century retreat for the influential and famous. Return to London for dinner and overnight.

DAY 5 (OCT 2) Stonehenge - Salisbury - Bath – Leave London and discover Salisbury Cathedral, one of the leading examples of early English Gothic architecture. Here we see the "Magna Carta" on display in the Chapter House which is one of only four surviving original copies. A historic agreement made in 1215 between King John and his barons, it acknowledged the fundamental principle that the monarch was not above the law. We continue to the mysterious and iconic Stonehenge, holding over 4500 years of English history. Step back in time and explore this ancient engineering masterpiece. Dinner and overnight in Bath.

DAY 6 (OCT 3) Bath - Oxford - Stratford-upon-Avon – Spend the morning touring Bath, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The city derives its name from its natural thermal springs and is home to a wide variety of historical attractions like the Roman Baths. It is also home to some of the most impressive Georgian architectural triumphs in the entire UK. After lunch , drive to Oxford, the world's most famous university town. Explore the most important sights, including Christ Church College(inside), where Charles and John Wesley were undergraduates. It was here that John Wesley gathered around him a group of serious-minded young men, known as The Holy Club, nicknamed the “Methodists,” and so began an evangelical revival. View the spot where John Wycliffe came to translate the first Bible into the vernacular of the day and the place where the intellectual whirlwind unleashed Wycliffe’s teachings which lead to the trial and burning of bishops Hugh Latimer, Nicholas Ridley, and Thomas Cranmer. See the very pub where 20th-century secularism was challenged by CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien. In the afternoon, drive north to the beautiful city of Stratford upon Avon, where Shakespeare himself was born and died. Dinner and overnight in Stratford upon Avon.

DAY 7 (OCT 4) Stratford-upon-Avon - Sheffield - Windermere – After breakfast, enjoy a guided city tour on the footpath of the World’s Greatest Poet. We have the chance to visit the House where Shakespeare was born 1564. Continue the journey to the town of Sheffield, which John Wesley visited many times. See the famous Cathedral where a stained-glass window in the Chapter House depicts John Wesley preaching in the square. After lunch, continue north to the shimmering lakes and hushed mountains of Lake District National Park. Lake District inspired many artists, and poets and writers such as Beatrix Potter, author of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Dinner and overnight in Windermere.

DAY 8 (OCT 5) Cruise Windermere - Gretna Green - Glasgow – Step aboard a boat on the beautiful Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England. Listen to beautiful romantic poems by the famous "Lake Poets" William Wordsworth, Samuel Coleridge, Thomas de Quincey and John Ruskin.  Journey north through the stunning country, passing the border and Hadrian’s Wall, arriving in Scotland. Take a city tour to learn about the Scottish Reformation. Dinner and overnight in Glasgow.

DAY 9 (OCT 6) Inveraray - Oban - Glasgow – After breakfast, venture into the unparalleled beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Discover Inveraray Castle, the residence of the Duke of Argyll. The Castle, nestled on the banks of Loch Fyne in Argyll, serves as the fictional location of Duneagle Castle in the famous TV series “Downton Abbey.” Arrive in the beautiful city of Oban, also known as the “gateway to the Hebride Islands.”  Here you can enjoy a delicious, freshly fried and battered fish and chips at the Ocean surrounded by Islands and Mountains.  Return to Glasgow for dinner and overnight.

DAY 10 (OCT 7) Edinburgh – In the morning, drive to Edinburgh to visit sights such as Holyrood Palace, the Royal Mile, Edinburgh castle, the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Victorian New Town,” the College of Divinity with Knox Statue, John Knox’s house, and St. Giles where he preached. Edinburgh is known for its dark past, and an evening walking tour is the original way to showcase the city's historically sinister and spooky side. Discover the hidden ‘wynds’ (alleys) and closes of the Old Town while learning of their mysteries and horrors. Visit the ghost ridden Greyfriars Kirkyard and explore the city’s underground vaults to uncover their spirits and secrets. Dinner and overnight in Edinburgh.

DAY 11 (OCT 8) Day at Leisure or Daytrip to St. Andrews – Enjoy a day of leisure in Edinburgh or drive to St. Andrews, the birthplace of the sport of golf and an important sight of the Scottish Reformation. Protestantism became Scotland’s main religion in part due to committed preachers like George Wishart and John Knox, who actively recruited and enthused the most influential and powerful sections of Scottish society to the Protestant cause. Knox, like many others, had been exposed to the Reformation and grew to support this new theology, as opposed to the traditional Catholic foundations of Scotland’s religion. Patrick Hamilton, a fellow St. Andrews reformer and Protestant martyr, and George Wishart, a priest who fled to Scotland in 1538 to escape accusations of heresy, both inspired Knox’s conversion to Protestantism. The three men became close friends. Return to Edinburgh for dinner and overnight.

DAY 12 (OCT 9) Edinburgh/USA - Transfer to Edinburgh Airport for your return flight home with luggage packed with keepsakes and your heart full of memories!
