The High Atlas is a spine made up of a series of forbidding mountains, making access difficult, although there are passes (at altitudes of above 2000m) along three axes. The inaccessibility of the region means that the local population has been less affected by the modernization that is taking place elsewhere in Morocco, and, apart from those who live near one of the few main roads, most of the inhabitants of the region, speak only Berber.
